Lighting Types - Torchieres

Merriam-Webster defines Torchiere (or Torchère) as a tall ornamental stand for a candlestick or candelabra or an electric floor lamp giving indirect light. Kichler defines Torchiere as a tall floor lamp with a bowl-shaped glass that diffuses the light and directs it upward.
	At its most basic, torchiere is from the French torche, their word for torch. Meaning, you have a tall torch that directs the light straight up but also provides a gentle illumination to the sides. Fortunately, we have electricity and don’t have to settle for open flames in our homes. Torchieres are part of a larger group called portables. Simply put, portable lamps are lights (or lamps) that can be picked up, moved and plugged in anywhere there is an electrical outlet. In addition to torchieres, both table lamps and floor lamps are also considered portable lamps.
Tochieres are a great part of any lighting design because they offer all of the beauty you find with other lamps but because the light points up you never have to worry about glare. In addition, with the glass of the torchiere opening upwards, you are able to use higher wattage bulbs so you can light up a larger area with just one lamp. Because of this, torchieres are a great addition for general lighting and have the great advantage that you can place them wherever you have a dark spot and an outlet. Torchieres can work well and look great in the living room, den, bedroom and family room.

Q – When would I need portables? A - Desk lamps, Table lamps, Floor lamps, Torchieres. These are known as Portables because they can be picked up and plugged in wherever there is an electrical outlet. All other lighting is direct-wired into your home. Many rooms will need more light in certain areas than a chandelier or other light fixture can provide. That’s where portables are important.

Q – What do portables do besides look pretty? A – Think of the rooms and areas in your home where you need more light for tasks such as homework, reading in a chair or reading in bed. Portables can provide the needed light for those activities.

Q – How far off the floor should a floor lamp or table lamp be? A – The bottom of the lampshade should be approximately 42 inches from the floor’s surface. Desk lamps should be 16 inches above the work surface and 13 inches from the front of a desk. Torchieres, used to light dark corners, can be from 66 to 72 inches from the floor.
