Lighting Types - Table Lamps
A table lamp is a portable light with one or more bulbs designed to stand freely on a table.

The basic definition of table lamps is easy enough to understand but there is plenty more to learn in order to know the full story.

Table lamps are one of three lighting options under the umbrella category of portable lamps. Portable lamps are simply lights that can be picked up, moved and plugged in anywhere there is an electrical outlet.  In addition to table lamps , both floor lamps and torchieres (floor lamps with the light shade opening up) are also considered portable lamps.

Table lamps serve many purposes when designing lighting for your home.  Obviously they are there to provide illumination, but the attractiveness of the lamp itself makes it a key design element as well.  Kichler has many styles of table lamps available from simple, sleek lamp bases to more intricate designs to bold colors and even figures built into the design.

And while the variety of lamp bases available for our table lamps is impressive, it pales in comparison to the unique styling and options we have available in our lamp shades.  Made from linen, fabrics, satin or glass, Kichler table lamps are designed with fashion in mind. From simple cone shapes to squares, bell shapes and more, many of the shades on our table lamps have beautiful adornments as well as an astounding number of colors.  We even carry a fine line of Tiffany style and Art Glass table lamps as well.  All of this means you can find just the right table lamp for the right place in your home.

Table lamps are great for task lighting such as by a desk or next to your favorite reading chair.  They also provide a nice general illumination to fill in dark areas where your overhead lighting may need help.  Table lamps also make great accent pieces and can be used as accent lighting for key design features in your home.

Table and Floor Lamps Tips

Q – When would I need portables?
A - Desk lamps, Table lamps, Floor lamps, Torchieres.  These are known as Portables because they can be picked up and plugged in wherever there is an electrical outlet. All other lighting is direct-wired into your home. Many rooms will need more light in certain areas than a
chandelier or other light fixture can provide.  That’s where portables are important.

Q – What do portables do besides look pretty?
A – Think of the rooms and areas in your home where you need more light for tasks such as homework, reading in a chair or reading in bed.  Portables can provide the needed light for those activities.

Q – How far off the floor should a floor lamp or table lamp be?
A – The bottom of the lampshade should be approximately 42 inches from the floor’s surface.  Desk lamps should be 16 inches above the work surface and 13 inches from the front of a desk.  Torchieres, used to light dark corners, can be from 66 to 72 inches from the floor.
