Lighting Your Home For the Holidays

Holiday_Outdoor3

Prepare your home for the Holiday Season with these simple, yet dramatic lighting tips. The key to creating an assortment of holiday moods focuses on a well-planned lighting layout (see light layers here). With a few core elements, almost any mood can be established and any gathering enhanced.

A blend of ambient (general) lighting, task lighting and accent (or decorative) lighting make for an almost endless array of lighting scenarios. To establish an elegant, sophisticated atmosphere concentrate on task and accent lighting in the selected areas you wish to showcase.

  • Adjust Table Lamps to the lowest setting.
  • Illuminate the cove lighting.
  • Use dimmed wall sconces to add drama.
  • Use directional lights over artwork and aimed at sculptures.
  • Light the fireplace to create a warm, inviting glow.
  • Light the foyer a bit brighter than the rest of the home. Remember, this is a transition area welcoming a guest and preparing them to leave.
  • If the foyer has sconces and recessed options, use them, but consider dimming all three light sources.

Lighting in Outdoor Settings...

  • Well-designed landscape lighting system is custom made for entertaining.
  • The lighting should be low and indirect.
  • Be certain that stairs and steps are well lit.
  • Direct light to the house address. Guests, unfamiliar with the locale will appreciate the help.

Save Energy…

    Holiday_Outdoor2

  • During the holidays and throughout the year, energy saving lighting options should be considered. The cost of electricity has increased every year since 2002 in excess of the cost of inflation and the cost of living.
  • Fluorescent lighting options and LED lighting systems should be considered.
  • If you are not ready to bring fluorescent retrofit lamps into the home, why not try outside? Often, people leave outdoor lighting energized throughout the night during the holiday season.
  • A switch to CFL’s could offset the added electricity consumed during the season. If you like the look outside, it becomes easier to add them to an assortment of outlets inside.
